A recent survey conducted by news agency dpa has shed light on a surprising trend among young adults in Germany – the frequent use of smartphones while using the restroom.

The survey, which polled 2,003 adults aged 25 to 34, found that an overwhelming 95% of them use their smartphones while on the toilet. This figure is particularly high when compared to the average use among adults, which stands at 54%.

The survey further revealed that men in this age group are more likely to engage in this behaviour, with 60% admitting to using their smartphones compared to 50% of women.

The primary activities during this smartphone usage include checking news, weather, WhatsApp, and other applications. In fact, 52% of users admitted to checking news, 46% the weather, 43% use WhatsApp, and 39% use other applications.

However, the survey also highlighted a concern regarding the potential health risks associated with this behaviour. Rheinbacher family doctor, Oliver Funken, warned about the development of hemorrhoids and the spread of germs due to prolonged smartphone usage on the toilet. He emphasized that hemorrhoids can be taken care of by a doctor if necessary.

Dr. Funken also advised regular cleaning of smartphones with a cleaning cloth and encouraged users to wash their hands as usual after using the restroom. He did not, however, provide information on the potential long-term health effects of this behaviour.

Interestingly, the survey found that 46% of users aged 25 to 34 feel the need to check their phones for news, weather, and messages while using the restroom. This was a surprise to 48% of users, indicating a possible disconnect between the need for instant information and the potential health risks associated with it.

Despite the concerns raised, the survey did not provide any figures on the percentage of users who do not use their smartphones while using the restroom.

In conclusion, the survey has brought to light a trend among young adults in Germany – the frequent use of smartphones while using the restroom. While this behaviour may cater to the need for instant information, it is essential to be aware of the potential health risks associated with it. As always, maintaining good hygiene practices and regular smartphone cleaning are advised.
